MFA Press Statement: Official Visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean to Negara Brunei Darussalam, 3 to 5 November 2017

        Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean will lead a delegation of younger Singapore political office holders to Negara Brunei Darussalam from 3 to 5 November 2017 for the 5th Young Leaders’ Programme (YLP), at the invitation of His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office of Negara Brunei Darussalam. Established in 2013, the YLP is an annual exchange of visits that Brunei and Singapore take turns to host. Crown Prince Billah led a delegation of younger Bruneian leaders to Singapore from 27 November to 2 December 2016 for the 4th YLP, and they had discussions with their Singaporean counterparts during the visit. The YLP reflects the long-term commitment from Singapore and Brunei to enhance the special relationship, including through the strengthening of ties between the next-generation leadership from both sides. This will be the third time DPM Teo leads the YLP delegation to Brunei.

        DPM Teo and the delegation will have an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam. The delegation will also have an audience with and be hosted to lunch by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. DPM Teo will reaffirm our close bilateral ties and explore new areas where Singapore and Brunei can learn from each other and work together. Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II Pehin Lim Jock Seng will host a High-Level Tea Reception for the Singaporean delegation to exchange views with various Bruneian Ministers and Deputy Ministers. Minister of Education Pehin Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman will host dinner for the delegation. DPM Teo and the delegation will also meet their respective counterparts and other Bruneian leaders to renew friendships and exchange views on regional developments.

        His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and the delegation will have a morning walk at the Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, which was officially launched by His Majesty the Sultan on 22 October 2017 as part of His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. In addition, DPM Teo and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah will jointly officiate the opening of the Bruneian leg of the co-curated exhibition titled “Abode of Peace and the Lion City: A Brunei-Singapore Exhibition” on 4 November 2017. This exhibition is a mark of the close friendship and special relationship between the two countries. The Singaporean leg of this two-part exhibition was launched by PM Lee Hsien Loong and His Majesty the Sultan during the latter’s State Visit to Singapore in July 2017.
