MFA Press Statement: Visit by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to Jakarta, Indonesia, 13 to 14 Feb 2018

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited Jakarta, Indonesia, from 13 to 14 February 2018. During the visit, Minister Balakrishnan met Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, and Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto, as well as a range of prominent Indonesian personalities.

 

Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Luhut had good discussions on bilateral and regional collaboration, and reaffirmed the close and longstanding relations between Singapore and Indonesia. 

 

Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Retno reaffirmed the excellent, multi-faceted bilateral relationship which is underpinned by strategic trust and close ties at all levels. They discussed the progress made since the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat in 2017, including in key areas of cooperation in trade, investments, tourism and the digital economy. Both Foreign Ministers looked forward to developing further substantive deliverables for the next Leaders’ Retreat in 2018 hosted by Indonesia.

 

  Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Airlangga discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation, including vocational education and skills training. Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Airlangga also noted the good progress of the Kendal Industrial Park.

 

Minister Balakrishnan called on former Indonesian President Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on 13 February 2018 and met GERINDRA Chairman Prabowo Subianto on 14 February 2018. In both meetings, Minister Balakrishnan exchanged views on recent regional developments and on Singapore’s Chairmanship of ASEAN.

 

Minister Balakrishnan met Governor of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta Dr Anies Baswedan on 13 February 2018. Minister Balakrishnan and Governor Anies explored strengthening city-to-city cooperation, including in urban solutions.

 

Minister Balakrishnan concludes his visit to Jakarta today.
