Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Statement: Visit by Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman to the Republic of Austria and Romania, 15 to 20 July 2018

Senior Minister of State (SMS), Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman concluded his working visit to Bucharest, Romania from 17 to 20 July 2018.

 

On 18 July 2018, SMS Maliki called on Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Meleşcanu and met State Councillor at the Office of Vice Prime Minister for Romania’s Strategic Partnerships’ Implementation Simion Purza. On the same day, SMS Maliki was hosted to dinner by State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Monica Gheorghiță.  

 

During SMS Maliki’s meeting with Minister Meleşcanu, both sides reaffirmed the friendly relations between Singapore and Romania, and reiterated their commitment to open and free trade. Both agreed that there was potential to strengthen cooperation, including in common areas of interest such as cybersecurity and education. SMS Maliki reiterated Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan’s invitation to Minister Meleşcanu to visit Singapore. The Romanian government also expressed Romania’s full support for the smooth ratification of the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA).

 

On 19 July 2018, SMS Maliki called on Minister for Business Environment, Commerce and Entrepreneurship Ştefan-Radu Oprea and Presidential Adviser in Charge of European Affairs Leonard Orban, and also met State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy Ion Radu.

 

SMS Maliki and Minister Oprea discussed how Singapore and Romania could grow economic cooperation and tap the potential of both regions. Minister Oprea shared with SMS Maliki Romania’s approach to promoting entrepreneurship in Romania. During SMS Maliki’s call on Presidential Adviser Orban, the latter apprised SMS Maliki on the developments in and challenges facing Europe.

 

SMS Maliki also attended a working lunch hosted by Romanian think tank National Strategy Centre, and visited the Employers’ Association of the Software and Services Industry, where he met Romanian tech companies and startups with an interest in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

 

SMS Maliki departed Bucharest today, and will arrive in Singapore on 21 July 2018.
