MFA Press Statement: Inaugural ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) Meeting, 8 July 2018

07 July 2018

The Inaugural ASCN Meeting will take place on 8 July 2018 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, and will be co-located with the World Cities Summit that will take place from 8 to 12 July 2018.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan will deliver the welcome address at the opening ceremony of the event. The opening ceremony will be attended by over 200 guests, including the ASCN’s National Representatives and Chief Smart City Officers, representatives from ASEAN’s external partners, multilateral banks, and private sector solution providers. The event is co-organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre for Liveable Cities, in partnership with Temasek Foundation Connects.

The ASCN is a flagship deliverable under Singapore’s 2018 ASEAN Chairmanship. The ASCN was established by the 32nd ASEAN Summit in April 2018, and consists of 26 pilot cities. The Inaugural ASCN Meeting is expected to build on the outcomes of the ASEAN Smart Cities Governance Workshop that was held in Singapore from 22 to 25 May 2018. The meeting is expected to endorse the ASEAN Smart Cities Framework, which sets out ASEAN’s definition of a smart city, as well as finalise the city-specific smart city action plans for the 26 pilot cities.
