MFA Press Statement: Visit to Singapore by State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Wang Yi, 1 to 5 August 2018

State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Wang Yi, who is making a bilateral visit to Singapore in conjunction with the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings, called on President Halimah Yacob earlier today at the Istana. State Councilor Wang also met Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan earlier and Minister Balakrishnan hosted dinner for State Councilor Wang this evening.  
 
        President Halimah and State Councilor Wang reaffirmed the longstanding and close relations between Singapore and China that are underpinned by regular high-level exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation.  They discussed the latest Government-to-Government projects, namely the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity (CCI) which has made very good progress since it was launched in 2015.  President Halimah welcomed China’s Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative.  Both President Halimah and State Councilor Wang noted that Singapore and China could further strengthen cooperation under the B&R, including realising the potential of the CCI-Southern Transport Corridor which connects Western China to Singapore and beyond.  They also discussed key regional developments, including ASEAN-China cooperation.  State Councilor Wang complimented the constructive role played by Singapore as the Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations over the last three years.   
 
Minister Balakrishnan and State Councilor Wang discussed the broad and substantive bilateral cooperation between the two countries and noted the regular exchange of high-level visits between the two sides.  They took stock of the progress made in ASEAN-China cooperation during Singapore’s successful three-year term as Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, and discussed ways to further advance mutually beneficial collaboration.  Minister Balakrishnan and State Councilor Wang also exchanged views on major developments in the region and the world.   
 
        State Councilor Wang will call on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong tomorrow.
