MFA Press Statement: Visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr Mohammad Javad Zarif to Singapore, 1 to 4 August 2018

                Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr Mohammad Javad Zarif is visiting Singapore on 1 to 4 August 2018 as a Guest of the ASEAN Chair.  He signed Iran’s Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) on 2 August 2018, on the side-lines of the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings.  Iran’s application for TAC accession was approved by consensus among ASEAN Member States in 2016.  Singapore as Chair of ASEAN welcomes Iran’s interest to engage ASEAN and Iran’s formal accession to the TAC, which aims to promote peace and cooperation among signatories. 
 
                During his visit, Minister Zarif also called on President Halimah Yacob, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.  During the calls, both sides reviewed ASEAN-Iran and Singapore-Iran relations, and exchanged views on developments in their respective regions.  Minister Zarif briefed our leaders on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.  Prime Minister Lee urged Iran to continue its cooperation with the international community.
