MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 25 Sep 2018

26 September 2018

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is in New York for the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Minister Balakrishnan and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, International Cooperation and Diaspora of the Republic of Chad, Cherif Mahamat Zene, signed a Joint Communique to formally establish diplomatic relations between the two countries on 25 September 2018, at the Permanent Mission of Singapore to the United Nations.

Minister Balakrishnan spoke at a High-Level Side Event on “Cyber Security and International Cooperation” chaired by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.  The event was organised by Bangladesh in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), and was co-sponsored by Singapore, Brazil, Estonia, Germany, Mexico, and Switzerland.  In his remarks, Minister Balakrishnan highlighted the importance of international cooperation in tackling cyber threats as no country could do it alone.  The United Nations and regional organisations such as ASEAN played a crucial role in facilitating international cooperation, developing and implementing norms, and promoting capacity-building on cyber issues.

Minister Balakrishnan met Holy See Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.  They reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Singapore and the Holy See, and discussed the importance of maintaining racial and religious harmony in our societies.  He also met World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder, where they exchanged views on regional and international developments.

Minister Balakrishnan also attended a State Luncheon hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for heads of delegation to the UNGA, and a reception hosted by UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jeremy Hunt for the members of the Commonwealth.
