MFA Press Statement: Official Visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashimite Kingdom of Jordan His Excellency Ayman Safadi, 7 to 8 November 2018

08 November 2018

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ayman Safadi is on an introductory visit to Singapore from 7 to 8 November 2018.

Minister Safadi paid courtesy calls on President Halimah Yacob and Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean today. President Halimah and Minister Safadi reaffirmed our warm bilateral relations, noting that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries. President Halimah acknowledged His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein’s efforts in promoting inter-faith harmony and religious moderation. DPM Teo and Minister Safadi exchanged views on regional security issues and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

Minister Safadi was hosted to a working lunch by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. The Ministers had a wide-ranging discussion on regional and international developments, and reaffirmed their commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as in technical and vocational training, and education. Both Ministers co-officiated at the opening of the new Embassy of Jordan this evening. The establishment of the resident Embassy is a milestone in Singapore-Jordan relations.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli hosted Minister Safadi to breakfast this morning, where the Ministers explored avenues to enhance cooperation in the areas of food, water, and Islamic education. Both Ministers expressed support for the ongoing discussions between the University of Jordan and MUIS (Islamic Religious Council of Singapore) on a partnership to co-develop a postgraduate certificate programme.

In the afternoon, Minister Safadi, accompanied by distinguished members of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, attended the Singapore-Jordan Business Roundtable organised by the Singapore Business Federation to discuss potential business opportunities in Jordan with Singapore business representatives.

On 7 November 2018, Minister Safadi delivered the 33rd International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Fullerton Lecture entitled “Challenges and Opportunities in the Middle East: A Jordanian Perspective”, where he provided an assessment of the latest developments in the Middle East.

Minister Safadi will depart Singapore tonight.
