MFA Press Statement: Visits by Guests of the ASEAN Chair President of the Republic of Chile Sebastián Piñera and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau in conjunction with the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits

President of the Republic of Chile Sebastián Piñera and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, who are on working visits to Singapore, called on President Halimah Yacob at the Istana today.  

President Halimah and President Piñera had a good discussion on the warm and friendly ties between Singapore and Chile, underpinned by our common outlook on the importance of free trade and the multilateral rules-based system. President Halimah welcomed Chile’s interest to engage ASEAN, and noted the longstanding cooperation between Singapore and Chile in forging stronger ties between Asia and Latin America, including through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.  President Piñera expressed interest in Singapore’s developmental transformation, and President Halimah shared Singapore’s policies on healthcare, tackling ageing, and the tripartite relationship between unions, employers, and the government.  Both leaders welcomed the 40^th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Chile in 2019.  President Halimah invited President Piñera to make a State Visit to Singapore in 2019 in conjunction with the 40^th anniversary of bilateral relations.

          President Halimah and Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed the longstanding and good relations between Singapore and Canada.  Both leaders discussed the positive progress in bilateral relations, including the new areas of cooperation in technology, FinTech, cyber-security, and infrastructure.  President Halimah and Prime Minister Trudeau also exchanged views on regional and international developments, as well as social and education policies, including measures to foster inclusiveness in multicultural and multi-religious societies. 

          President Piñera and Prime Minister Trudeau will both depart Singapore on 16 November 2018.
