MFA Press Statement: Visit of Minister of State, MFA and MSF, Sam Tan to Asunción, Paraguay, 19 Mar 2019

Minister of State (MOS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Social and Family Development Sam Tan visited Asunción, Paraguay on 19 March 2019.  During the visit, he called on Minister of Foreign Affairs Luis Castiglioni and Minister of Industry and Commerce Liz Cramer.  MOS Tan was also hosted to lunch by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugo Saguier Caballero, and attended a business presentation by the Industrial Union of Paraguay.
 
During his call on Minister Castiglioni, MOS Tan reaffirmed the friendly relations between Singapore and Paraguay, underpinned by our common interest in promoting trade and economic integration.  They discussed ongoing efforts to promote greater cooperation between Latin America and Southeast Asia, and welcomed the upcoming first round of negotiations on the MERCOSUR-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (MSFTA) in April 2019.  Minister Castiglioni and MOS Tan agreed to explore new areas of cooperation to deepen political, economic, and people-to-people ties.
 
During his meeting with Industry and Commerce Minister Cramer, MOS Tan reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to deepening economies ties with Paraguay and MERCOSUR.  The Ministers agreed to build on the momentum of the first round of MSFTA negotiations, which would send a strong signal of Paraguay and Singapore’s commitment to free trade and open markets.
 
MOS Tan will travel to Buenos Aires to participate in the 2nd United Nations High-Level Conference on the South-South Cooperation (“BAPA+40”) in Buenos Aires from 20 to 22 March 2019.
