State Visit of the President of Turkmenistan, His Excellency Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow, 26 to 27 August 2019

President of Turkmenistan His Excellency Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow received a Welcome Ceremony at the Istana this afternoon. President Berdimuhammedow paid a courtesy call on President Halimah Yacob and met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. President Halimah hosted President Berdimuhammedow to a State Banquet in the evening.

President Halimah and President Berdimuhammedow reaffirmed the friendly ties between Singapore and Turkmenistan, and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation. President Halimah welcomed President Berdimuhammedow’s interest to deepen engagement with Singapore in areas such as trade and investment, tourism and capacity building.

President Berdimuhammedow briefed Prime Minister Lee on Turkmenistan’s priorities, including developing its infrastructure and connectivity. Both leaders also affirmed the close cooperation between the two countries in various international fora.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Lee and President Berdimuhammedow witnessed the signing of three agreements. These were a Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in the Legal Field, the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement, and the Visa Abolition Agreement.

During the visit, President Berdimuhammedow also met the heads of several Singapore companies over breakfast, and encouraged the Singapore business community to invest in Turkmenistan.

President Berdimuhammedow will depart from Singapore tonight.
