Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is on a working visit to Japan from 22 to 23 November 2019.
In Tokyo, Minister Balakrishnan met Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Motegi Toshimitsu. Minister Balakrishnan congratulated Foreign Minister Motegi on Japan’s successful G20 Presidency. The Ministers reaffirmed the excellent relations between Singapore and Japan, and discussed deepening bilateral cooperation and collaborating in multilateral fora. The Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international developments.
Minister Balakrishnan also met Minister of Defense Kono Taro, Minister of the Environment Koizumi Shinjiro, National Security Secretariat Secretary-General Kitamura Shigeru, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) General Council Chairman Suzuki Shunichi, and LDP Lower House Member and former Minister of Defense Onodera Itsunori. In these meetings, Minister Balakrishnan reaffirmed the warm and multi-faceted relations between Singapore and Japan, and discussed regional and international developments, as well as developments in Japan.
Minister Balakrishnan welcomed the critical role played by Japan in the region, including in the entry into force of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the significant milestone achieved on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Singapore looks forward to working with Japan to uphold the open, inclusive and rules-based multilateral trading system, particularly in the region.
Later today, Minister Balakrishnan will travel to Nagoya to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
