Working Visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to Japan, 22-23 Nov 2019

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan attended the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Nagoya from 22 to 23 November 2019, which rounds up a successful year under the Japanese G20 Presidency.
 
The G20 Foreign Ministers discussed the importance of upholding an open and rules-based multilateral trading system as embodied by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The Ministers supported continued efforts towards the realisation of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, which comprises 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs). In addition, the Ministers emphasised efforts to assist Africa in its development.
 
At the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Minister Balakrishnan reiterated the need to support global governance structures, particularly the WTO, and highlighted efforts by countries including Singapore to establish rules in new areas such as e-commerce, which is a key growth pillar for world trade.
 
On sustainable development, Minister Balakrishnan highlighted Singapore’s strong support for the 2030 Agenda. He also shared Singapore’s capacity building efforts under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP) to help other developing countries achieve the SDGs.
 
On the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Minister Balakrishnan held meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina Jorge Faurie, Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand Winston Peters, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia His Highness Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud. Minister Balakrishnan and his counterparts reaffirmed the good ties between the respective bilateral relationships.  They had fruitful discussions on regional and international developments.
