Appointment Of High Commissioner to the Republic of India, 30 June 2020

The Government has appointed Mr Simon Wong Wie Kuen as Singapore’s next High Commissioner to the Republic of India.

Mr Wong was Singapore’s Trade Representative to Taiwan from July 2015 to January 2020. Prior to his appointment as Trade Representative, he was Deputy Secretary (International) from August 2012 to June 2015.

Mr Wong joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1990. He served in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, covering the Americas, Europe and Northeast Asia. As Deputy Secretary (International), Mr Wong was also appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Diplomatic Academy and the Board of Directors of the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise. He also served as Ambassador at the Singapore Embassy in Hanoi from 2009 to 2012, Minister-Counsellor at the Singapore Embassy in Beijing from 2000 to 2005, and First Secretary at the Singapore Embassy in Seoul from 1992 to 1995.

Mr Wong graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Science in Sociology (Honours) in 1990. He obtained a Master of Arts in East Asian studies from Cornell University, United States of Americas in 1998.

Mr Wong was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2002, and the Long Service Award (25 years) in 2014 by the Singapore Government. He was awarded the Vietnam Order of Friendship in 2012 by His Excellency President Truong Tan Sang, and the Order of St Michael and St George in 2014 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

 

The Government has appointed Mr Simon Wong Wie Kuen as Singapore’s next High Commissioner to the Republic of India. Mr Wong will be concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Bhutan and Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

Mr Wong was Singapore’s Trade Representative to Taiwan from July 2015 to January 2020. Prior to this, he was Deputy Secretary (International) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from August 2012 to June 2015.

Mr Wong joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1990. In the Ministry’s Headquarters, Mr Wong covered several portfolios including The Americas, Europe and Northeast Asia. He was appointed Director/Americas from April 2005 to July 2007. He concurrently served as Director/Europe (May 2005 to February 2006) and subsequently Director/Northeast Asia from April 2006 to January 2009. During his stint as Deputy Secretary (International), Mr Wong was also appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Diplomatic Academy (September 2012 to May 2015) and the Board of Directors of the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (September 2012 to February 2015).

His overseas assignments included postings in Seoul (December 1992 to December 1995), Beijing (January 2000 to March 2005), and Hanoi, where he served as Ambassador from February 2009 to August 2012.
