Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan had an introductory video call with Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marc Garneau on 9 February 2021. Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Garneau reaffirmed the warm and friendly relations between Singapore and Canada and a shared outlook on key issues such as the importance of multilateralism and free trade. They welcomed the growing bilateral trade and economic ties following the entry into force of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Singapore’s first FTA with Canada. Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Garneau also exchanged views on regional and international developments. Minister Balakrishnan welcomed Canada’s efforts in strengthening its engagement of ASEAN and the region.
