Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan’s Meetings in Washington D.C., United States of America, 26 to 29 September 2021

            Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is on a working visit to Washington D.C. from 26 to 29 September 2021.

           Apart from his meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken,Minister Balakrishnan met with National Security Council Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Kurt Campbell on 27 September 2021. Minister Balakrishnan also had meetings on Capitol Hill on 27 and 28 September 2021, including with Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) Chairman Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) and Ranking Member Jim Risch (R-Idaho), SFRC Subcommittee on East Asia, The Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy Chairman Edward Markey (D-Massachusetts), Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) Subcommittee on Airland Chairwoman Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) and Ranking Member Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), SFRC Member Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, The Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation Ranking Member Steve Chabot (R-Ohio). Minister Balakrishnan also met Co-Chairs of the Congressional Singapore Caucus Representatives Rick Larsen (D-Washington) and David Schweikert (R-Arizona).

           In his meetings with Members of Congress and Biden Administration officials, Minister Balakrishnan welcomed deeper US engagement of the Asia-Pacific region and discussed ways to enhance cooperation, especially in areas such as the digital economy, cybersecurity, smart cities, green economy and sustainable infrastructure. The Members of Congress affirmed the excellent and longstanding ties between Singapore and the US, which remains the largest foreign investor and a major trading partner of Singapore. They expressed appreciation for our broad-based and steadfast partnership as we celebrate the 55thanniversary of bilateral relations this year.

           Minister Balakrishnan will meet House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, The Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation Chairman Ami Bera (D-California) on 29 September 2021, following which he will depart for Singapore on the same day.
