President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, who is concurrently Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, made an Official Visit to Singapore from 6 to 7 February 2022.
The PGA called on President Halimah Yacob and met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on 7 February 2022. The leaders exchanged views on issues of global concern, including climate change, sustainable development, and post-pandemic recovery, and agreed that multilateral cooperation is essential to overcoming these challenges.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan hosted the PGA to breakfast on 7 February 2022. Minister Balakrishnan reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to multilateralism and the invaluable role of the United Nations (UN). He expressed support for the PGA’s “Presidency of Hope” agenda for the UN and the PGA’s plans to convene a high-level commemorative event to mark the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in April 2022. Both sides reaffirmed UNCLOS as an integral part of the rules-based international order.
Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu hosted the PGA to a visit to the Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay on 6 February 2022, where the PGA was briefed on Singapore’s policies on water and sustainable development. He also interacted with youth leaders involved in sustainability initiatives. The PGA visited the Singapore City Gallery and was briefed on Singapore’s long-term approach to urban planning on 7 February 2022.
