Senior Minister (SM) and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean visited Cairo from 11 to 13 September 2022.
In a series of meetings with Egyptian Ministers involved in COP-27, namely Foreign Minister His Excellency Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Environment Her Excellency Yasmine Fouad, and Egypt’s UN High-Level Climate Change Champion Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, SM Teo reaffirmed Singapore’s support for Egypt’s presidency and expressed Singapore’s readiness to work with Egypt for a successful COP-27. They discussed ways in which Singapore and Egypt can work together in concrete areas such as sustainable finance, carbon markets and food resilience as part of global climate action.
SM Teo met Minister of Interior His Excellency Mahmoud Tawfiq. They exchanged views on security developments in the region and welcomed cooperation and exchanges in countering terrorism.
SM Teo also called on the Grand Imam of Al Azhar His Eminence Dr Ahmed Al Tayyeb. SM Teo conveyed his appreciation to the Grand Imam for his support of the Singapore student community at Al Azhar University. Singapore supports the important role played by Al Azhar in the Islamic world. Both SM Teo and the Grand Imam agreed on the importance of promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding among different faith communities.
SM Teo will have an engagement session with Singaporean students at Al Azhar University today, and depart Cairo for Paris.
