Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Education and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman is on a working visit to Astana, Kazakhstan.
Minister Maliki called on His Excellency President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev today. President Tokayev and Minister Maliki reaffirmed the warm and longstanding ties between Singapore and Kazakhstan as both countries commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. President Tokayev welcomed Singapore’s participation as a guest at the 6th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). President Tokayev encouraged Singapore companies to explore opportunities in Kazakhstan, particularly in the transport and logistics sector. Minister Maliki agreed that there was scope for stronger economic and people-to-people ties which would be boosted by better connectivity. Minister Maliki said that Singapore looked forward to hosting President Tokayev on a State Visit at a mutually convenient time.
Minister Maliki also met His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade Integration Serik Zhumangarin. The Ministers discussed potential areas of cooperation such as supply chain connectivity and digitalisation. They welcomed the progress made on negotiations on the Services and Investment Agreement under the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union – Singapore Free Trade Agreement.
Separately, Minister Maliki met His Excellency Minister of Science and Higher Education Nurbek Sayasat. They had a good exchange of views on the challenges of education amidst rapid changes in skills and technology. Minister Maliki welcomed Kazakhstan’s interest to learn from Singapore’s experience in the area of skills training and lifelong learning.
Minister Maliki was hosted to dinner by His Excellency Governor of the Astana International Financial Centre Dr Kairat Kelimbetov. They exchanged views on the latest developments in the global economy.
