Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan's Meetings in Washington D.C., 14 to 15 June 2023

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is on a working visit to Washington D.C..

Minister Balakrishnan had productive meetings on Capitol Hill with Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois), Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Singapore Caucus Representatives Rick Larsen (D-Washington) and David Schweikert (R-Arizona), Representative Jake Auchincloss (D-Massachusetts), Representative Suzan Delbene (D-Washington), Representative Andrew Kim (D-New Jersey), Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois), and Representative Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin). Minister Balakrishnan welcomed the strong bi-partisan Congressional support for the robust US-Singapore partnership and steadfast commitment towards enhancing US presence in the region. He also held discussions with members of Congress on global and regional developments.

Minister Balakrishnan had a phone call with Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, where they reaffirmed the strong bilateral collaboration in forward-looking areas like climate, cybersecurity, as well as the close regional cooperation, including at ASEAN and on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity. Minister Balakrishnan met Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger and exchanged views on cybersecurity, cooperation to maximise deterrence and enhance cyber resilience. Minister Balakrishnan met Deputy Special Envoys for Climate Sue Biniaz and Richard Duke and former Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern and discussed developments in climate diplomacy and explored ways the US and Singapore can cooperate on the region’s energy transition.

Minister Balakrishnan participated in a moderated discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations. He spoke about the close and enduring partnership between the US and Singapore and the importance of continued US engagement in the Asia-Pacific. He shared his views on global developments from the point of view of a small state and open economy.
