Visit by Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung to Brunei Darussalam, 14 to 17 July 2023

Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung visited Brunei Darussalam from 14 to 17 July 2023 as the Singapore Government’s representative to the 77th birthday celebrations of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. As part of the official programme, Minister Ong attended the Royal Guard of Honour Ceremony, Investiture Ceremony, and the Royal Banquet.

 

During his audience with His Majesty, Minister Ong conveyed birthday greetings from Singapore’s leaders to His Majesty and expressed appreciation for His Majesty’s longstanding and strong support for the excellent bilateral relationship. His Majesty and Minister Ong also discussed ways to strengthen the close bilateral cooperation across new and existing domains.

 

Minister Ong had a separate audience with His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince of Brunei, during which they reaffirmed the mutual commitment of both countries to continue to deepen ties between the next generation of Singapore and Brunei leaders and officials, including through the 9th Singapore-Brunei Young Leaders’ Programme which His Royal Highness will host later this year.

 

Minister Ong also met Brunei Minister of Health Dato Isham Jaafar, Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Amin Liew Abdullah, and Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Shamhary Mustapha. During his engagements with the Bruneian Ministers, Minister Ong emphasised the enduring nature of Singapore-Brunei ties and discussed how to further cooperation on emerging areas of mutual interest such as the digital economy, food and medical supplies, and sustainability. Minister Ong also toured the EVYD Campus in Brunei to learn more about Brunei’s digital public health initiatives.

 

Minister Ong’s visit to Brunei reflects the special relationship and deep reservoir of trust between Singapore and Brunei, which is undergirded by historic and people-to-people ties. Minister Ong is accompanied by his spouse as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health.
