Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau visited Singapore from 7 to 8 September 2023. Prime Minister Trudeau met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on 8 September.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Lee reaffirmed the warm friendship between Singapore and Canada, which is underpinned by a shared outlook on key issues like commitment to multilateralism and the rule of law, and recognition of the importance of free trade.
Both Prime Ministers discussed international developments and how countries like Singapore and Canada can work together to uphold the rules-based multilateral order, and advance economic growth for the betterment of our peoples. Prime Minister Lee welcomed Canada’s deepening engagement of ASEAN, and congratulated Prime Minister Trudeau on the recent upgrading of ASEAN-Canada relations to a Strategic Partnership.
Singapore’s relations with Canada are warm and longstanding, with growing bilateral cooperation in a number of areas. These include the renewal of the Canada-Singapore Cybersecurity Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will enhance cooperation between both countries on cyberspace through information exchange, skills development, and capacity building programmes, and beginning negotiations on a General Security Agreement to facilitate deeper defence exchanges and collaborations between Singapore and Canada. Both sides are discussing ways to advance cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation. They also intend to establish a Canada-Singapore Youth Mobility Agreement, which will help to foster stronger people-to-people ties and promote cross-cultural exchanges by making it easier for young people from both countries to work and travel in each other’s countries.
Prime Minister Trudeau was accompanied at the meeting by Canada Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development Mary Ng.
