Official Visit by Senior Minister & Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean to the People's Republic of China, 17 to 22 March 2024

Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean made an official visit to China (Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Beijing) from 17 to 22 March 2024.

 

In Chengdu and Hangzhou, Senior Minister Teo met Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Sichuan Provincial Committee Wang Xiaohui and Secretary of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee Yi Lianhong, respectively. They discussed ways to deepen Singapore’s cooperation with Western China and the Yangtze River Delta. Senior Minister Teo also engaged representatives of Singapore companies, and surveyed the latest economic developments in both provinces.

 

On 21 March, Senior Minister Teo met President of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee Chen Xi in Beijing. They took stock of Singapore and China’s longstanding cooperation in the field of human resource development and welcomed the resumption of in-person exchanges after the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

On 22 March, Senior Minister Teo had separate meetings with Vice President Han Zheng and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Chen Wenqing. Senior Minister Teo and Vice President Han reaffirmed the excellent relations between Singapore and China, and welcomed key bilateral milestones this year: the 30th anniversary of the Suzhou Industrial Park, Singapore’s and China’s first Government-to-Government project; and the 20th edition of the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation. Senior Minister Teo and Vice President Han discussed ways to strengthen connectivity to support growing people-to-people exchanges. They also exchanged views on recent regional and international developments.

 

Senior Minister Teo and Secretary Chen welcomed the ongoing bilateral cooperation on legal and judicial issues. They also looked forward to co-chairing the 4th Singapore-China Social Governance Forum, which is a key platform for officials from Singapore and China to exchange views on experiences in social governance, in Singapore this year. Senior Minister Teo and Secretary Chen also discussed ways to work together to tackle transnational crime.

 

Senior Minister Teo returns to Singapore today.
