PRESS RELEASE "The Singapore Journey 50 Years through Stamps" Philatelic Exhibition

01 Nov 2016

HONG KONG, 1 NOVEMBER 2016 – The Consulate-General of Singapore in Hong Kong, in conjunction with the Singapore Philatelic Museum, launched “The Singapore Journey: 50 Years through Stamps” philatelic exhibition on 1 November 2016 at Olympian City.  This is the first-ever philatelic exhibition organised by the Consulate-General of Singapore in Hong Kong.  A variety of stamps, philatelic materials and artefacts showcasing Singapore’s political, economic and social development, multi-ethnic culture, arts and crafts, and our flora and fauna, are on display at this exhibition.

The exhibition was jointly opened by Mr Jacky Foo, Consul-General of Singapore in Hong Kong and guest-of-honour Mr Godfrey Leung, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government.  Ms Derby Lau, Postmaster General of Macao SAR; Ms Estella Chow, Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development), Hongkong Post; and Ms Tresnawati Prihadi, General Manager, Singapore Philatelic Museum also officiated at the event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Consul-General Mr Jacky Foo said that the Consulate is delighted to bring the exhibition to Hong Kong to share the rich facets of Singapore’s heritage, culture, community and nature with Singapore’s friends in Hong Kong.  Mr Foo added that both cities shared excellent and wide-ranging bilateral ties, as well as extensive people-to-people exchanges.  He encouraged the public to visit the exhibition and find out more about Singapore’s culture and diversity through stamps, and see the rare stamps on display including the first stamp issued by Singapore in 1966.

In her opening remarks, Ms Tresnawati Prihadi, General Manager of the Singapore Philatelic Museum, described stamps as miniature works of art which reflected the unique social fabric and cultural diversity of Singapore.  She hoped that friends in Hong Kong will enjoy through stamps the exciting journey of discovering Singapore’s road to independence, as well as Singapore’s close relations with other countries, as seen from a Singapore-Hong Kong joint stamp issue in 1999.

“The Singapore Journey: 50 Years through Stamps” exhibition will be on display at Olympian City from 1 – 12 November 2016, and will continue at Citywalk in Tsuen Wan from 14 – 21 November, followed by E-max at KITEC in Kowloon Bay from 22 November – 2 December.
