The Singapore Speaker Series 2018 was held on 18 October 2018 at the Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong. The Consulate-General in Hong Kong was glad to support the event organised by the Overseas Singaporean Unit. Over 280 Singaporeans gathered to hear from the speaker DBS Group Chief Executive Officer Piyush Gupta on the latest developments in Singapore’s financial sector and innovation and technology front.
In her opening remarks, Consul-General Foo Teow Lee spoke about the various new policies announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to address concerns about healthcare costs and ageing housing estates. Gupta highlighted Singapore’s competitive advantages in the banking and finance sectors. He also shared with the audience on how he led DBS to become the “World’s Best Bank”. In an engaging Q&A session, many Singaporeans took the opportunity to ask Gupta about his management experience and his views on economic developments around the world.
A trademark for the Singapore Speaker Series is the delicious buffet dinner and this year is no exception. Tucking into local dishes such as Hainanese Chicken Rice and laksa, Singaporeans in Hong Kong reconnected with each other and established new friendships.
