In response to media queries on the Australian Cabinet's decision to deny SIA access to the trans-Pacific route and subsequent comments by Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer on the matter, Minister Yeo said, "Singapore-Australia relations are excellent and will not be affected by Canberra's decision not to open the trans-Pacific route to SIA. We are naturally disappointed but we respect Australia's decision to protect Qantas."
