THE ASEAN SCHOLARSHIPS

The application for ASEAN Scholarships AY 2007 is now open.

The ASEAN Scholarships are offered annually to outstanding students in ASEAN countries for studies in selected secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore, leading to the General Certificate of Education (Advanced) Level Examination. These scholarships are offered by Singapore's Ministry of Education, in line with the Singapore Government's long-term objective of helping their ASEAN neighbours develop human resource.

Scholars enter Singapore schools at 3rd year high school and will sit for the GCE 'A' Level (or equivalent) Examination at the end of Pre-University 2. Those who score good grades in this exam can continue their undergraduate studies at the National University of Singapore or Nanyang Technological University on scholarships that the universities administer.

Applicants for the Scholarship must be Filipinos born between 1990 and 1992. They must have done consistently well in their school examinations and have completed at least their 2nd year of high school. Preference will be given to applicants who have scored good grades in their 3rd year high school examinations.

Each award covers a scholarship allowance of S$2,200 (Secondary) and S$2,400 (Pre-university) per annum with hostel accommodation, settling-in allowance of S$200 at the start of the scholarship, exemption from school fees, economy class airfare at the start and end of scholarship term, subsidised medical benefits and accident insurance cover. There is no bond attached to the Scholarship.

Application for the ASEAN Scholarships ends on 9 June 2006. Interested candidates should fill in and submit their application forms available from the Singapore Embassy in Manila. Only shortlisted applicants will be required to sit for a selection test in July in General Ability, English and Mathematics. Candidates who have done well in the selection test will be invited for an interview in August 2006 and will be informed of the awards by October.
