ASEAN SG Conveys Deep Sympathy over Flooding in Myanmar

JAKARTA, 5 August 2015 – Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh conveyed profound sympathy for the families and communities affected by heavy floods in the central and northern parts of Myanmar.

In a letter addressed to Myanmar's Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. U Wunna Maung Lwin, SG Minh said that the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) will continue to monitor the situation, as well as support the on-going humanitarian and disaster-relief efforts undertaken by the Government of Myanmar for the affected communities.

Myanmar, in particular the central and northern parts, is currently experiencing massive flooding due to heavy rainfall associated with southwest monsoon and a tropical storm over the Bay of Bengal. Following his visit to the affected areas, on 31 July 2015 President Thein Sein issued a statement declaring natural disaster zones in Chin and Rakhine States and Sagain and Magway regions.

Upon Myanmar's acceptance of offer of assistance, AHA Centre will support Myanmar's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), including emergency Information and Communication Technology (ICT) support, and provide emergency relief supplies based on needs.
