ASEAN, Canada to Further Strengthen Cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 August 2015 – Canada will redouble its efforts to increase the level of cooperation with ASEAN. In a bilateral meeting with Secretary-General of ASEAN H.E. Le Luong Minh, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada H.E. Daniel Jean said greater focus will be given to areas such as small and medium size enterprises, connectivity and disaster mitigation.

Deputy Minister Jean also discussed with SG Minh on ways and means to effectively carry out the recently adopted Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN-Canada Enhanced Partnership (2016 – 2020). H.E. Minh urged Canada to work with ASEAN to prioritise key areas for cooperation in implementing the Plan of Action. He also encouraged Canada to align its support to ASEAN with those of ASEAN's Post 2015 Vision.

In expressing appreciation to Canada for promoting economic cooperation with ASEAN, Secretary-General Minh encouraged the ASEAN-Canada Business Council to take more active role in promoting trade and investment between the two sides.

Deputy Minister Jean and Secretary-General Minh also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues that affect peace and stability, including the South China Sea issue.
