New Cambodian Permanent Representative to ASEAN Presents His Letter of Credence
JAKARTA, 27 August 2015 - Cambodian Permanent Representative to ASEAN, H.E. Norng Sakal, presented his Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh, at a ceremony held at the ASEAN Secretariat today.
Recognising the prevailing challenges to realise the ASEAN Community by end of this year, both SG Minh and Ambassador Sakal shared the view that ASEAN must exert greater efforts to overcome the obstacles in implementing the remaining measures under the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community (2009-2015). In this regard, SG Minh highlighted that the role and contribution of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) is becoming more important in the community building efforts and in realising the objectives for ASEAN set by the Leaders. As ASEAN is embarking on a more resilient, forward-looking and rules-based Community, the CPR's contribution in consolidating and strengthening ASEAN's central role and centrality in its engagements with external parties is essential.
Both SG Minh and Ambassador Sakal shared the view that the CPR and the ASEAN Secretariat should continue to work closely together to ensure effective and timely implementation of the relevant recommendations of the High Level Task Force on Strengthening the ASEAN Secretariat and Reviewing the ASEAN Organs as well as to achieve the tasks set by the Leaders. Ambassador Sakal assured SG Minh that Cambodia stands ready and is committed to implement the post-2015 vision as ASEAN remains as an important cornerstone of Cambodia's foreign policy.
Ambassador Sakal expressed his gratitude to the SG Minh for the continuous support rendered by the ASEAN Secretariat to his Government and Embassy in Jakarta. He also expressed his readiness to working closely with his colleagues at the CPR and the ASEAN Secretariat to achieve the vision set by the Leaders.
Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Sakal was the Director-General of ASEAN at the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
