Chile, Egypt , and Morocco sign Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia
VIENTIANE, 6 September 2016 – Chile, Egypt and Morocco acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in a ceremony on the sideline of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits. The ceremony was attended by ASEAN Foreign Ministers, the designated representatives of the Foreign Ministers of Chile, Egypt, and Morocco and the Secretary-General of ASEAN.
ASEAN Member States signed the TAC in 1976 in Bali. It was amended in 1998 to allow non-Southeast Asian countries to accede to the treaty. With current 35 signatories, the TAC serves as the key code of conduct for inter-state relations in Southeast Asia, embodying universal principles of peaceful co-existence and friendly cooperation among states in the region.
The new accessions reflect the growing recognition of the TAC by non-Southeast Asian countries and reaffirm its importance as a strong foundation for regional cooperation and confidence building.
