ASEAN to enhance peace and reconciliation processes in the region

YANGON, 9 November 2016 – The ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) Symposium on Principles, Mechanisms and Practices of Peace and Reconciliation Processes was held on 4-5 November in Yangon to enhance peace and reconciliation processes in ASEAN through sharing of experiences of Member States and learning from international best practices.

Recognising that a comprehensive peace process requires the partnership of all stakeholders, the two-day symposium brought together peace and security practitioners and scholars to discuss different ceasefire mechanisms, share best practices of conflict prevention and resolution as well as various forms of confidence building measures. It served as a good learning opportunity for all stakeholders, including government officials and civil society, in the peace processes.

“AIPR is an important part of ASEAN’s institutional framework in our efforts to promote peace, reconciliation, and conflict resolution and prevention in the region,” stressed Secretary-General of ASEAN Le Luong Minh in his opening address.

The symposium was organised by the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar ISIS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar and supported by the Governments of Norway and Switzerland. It was attended by members of Myanmar ISIS, representatives of ASEAN and Dialogue Partners’ diplomatic corps in Yangon, Advisory Board and Governing Council members of the AIPR.
