ASEAN deepens engagement with non-ASEAN ambassadors accredited to ASEAN in Jakarta

25 January 2017, JAKARTA – The Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) met with the non-ASEAN ambassadors accredited to ASEAN in Jakarta (NAAAs) at the ASEAN Secretariat today. This is the first gathering of such nature aimed at engaging ambassadors accredited to ASEAN in Jakarta, apart from the Dialogue, Sectoral Dialogue and Development Partners as well as those from regional organisations with existing engagements with ASEAN.

The NAAAs were briefed on the role of the CPR and the ASEAN mechanisms including those based in Jakarta. They were also introduced to the respective ASEAN Country Coordinators in charge of the regions, namely, Africa, Middle East, Europe, Central Asia, South/North Asia and the Pacific, and Central America/Latin America and the Caribbean.

This first gathering signified ASEAN’s continuous efforts in strengthening its external relations through advancing cooperation with the external partners.

In her remarks as the Chair of the CPR, Ambassador Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN, highlighted the priorities for the Philippine chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017 under the theme of “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World”, which captures ASEAN’s resolve to consolidate the ASEAN Community building for the benefit of its peoples and highlighted ASEAN as a model of regionalism and a global player.

Following this gathering, the CPR and NAAAs agreed to meet at least twice in a year with their respective groupings to further enhance engagement and to support the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.
