ASEAN lights famous landmarks to celebrate 50th anniversary
JAKARTA, 8 August 2017 – In celebration of ASEAN’s 50th anniversary today, the member states will light the national landmarks in ASEAN colors. The event commemorates the founding of ASEAN on August 8, 1967.
Brunei Darussalam will light the Royal Regalia Building accompanied by ASEAN Anthem and a welcoming dance. Cambodia will light six landmarks namely Wat Phnom Historical Site, Independence Monument, Phnom Penh City Hall Building, Central Market (Phsar Thmey), Independence Esplanade and Riverside Walkway.
The National Monument (MONAS) and the Welcome Monument in Jakarta, Indonesia, will be lit on 1-8 August 2017 at night, while Lao PDR will light the Patuxay Monument on 8 August at 7 in the evening.
Malaysia chose the KL Tower to be the landmark that celebrates the golden anniversary of ASEAN. It will be lit in ASEAN colors on 8 August at 8-12 pm. Yangon City Hall in Myanmar will also be lit on 8 August at 7 pm.
The 2017 ASEAN Chair, Philippines, will light the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on 8 August at 7 in the evening. There will also be side events to be conducted such as blowing of horns at national ports; ASEAN Parade from Luneta Park to CCP with floats, higantes (giant paper maches), marching bands and students; lighting of a 20-foot ASEAN Lantern; and Music Festival at the Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Sixty-two other cities and municipalities around the country are also participating in the landmark lighting activity.
In Singapore, the Esplanade – Theaters on the Bay will be lit up on 8 August at 06:45 pm to midnight.
One model cluster with lighting decoration will be placed at the traffic circle of August Revolution Square in Ha Noi, Viet Nam. The country will also install 13 ASEAN emblems on electronic poles and light them at the city’s Opera House in Hai Phong. Short films, documentaries and other ASEAN information will be displayed on three large-sized LED screens located at intersection of Bach Dang – Nguyen Van Linh Road and intersection of Pham Van Dong – Vo Nguyen Giap Road, Da Nang. 3D graphic lighting can also be seen at Reunification Palace, Opera House, Ho Chi Minh Museum, city’s Post Office, and Headquarters of the City People’s Committee, Ho Chi Minh City.
As Thailand is still in mourning for the passing of the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand will not be able to participate in the ASEAN Landmark Lighting activity.
