ASEAN, India celebrate 25th anniversary of dialogue relations

NEW DELHI, 24 January 2018 – Leading up to the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit marking the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-India dialogue relations on 25 January 2018, ASEAN and India carried out several activities in New Delhi to showcase the partnership to various stakeholders.

These activities included engagements with students and journalists under the ASEAN-India student and media exchange programmes; youth awards for young achievers; ASEAN-India Business and Investment Meet and Expo; and the Inauguration of Bharat-ASEAN Maitri Park (India-ASEAN Friendship Park).

Secretary-General (SG) of ASEAN Dato Lim Jock Hoi, who is in New Delhi to attend the Commemorative Summit, interacted with students and journalists who are participating in the ASEAN-India Students Exchange and the ASEAN Media Exchange programmes. Both annual programmes are aimed at forging closer people-to-people contacts between the two sides. This year, 20 journalists and 250 students from the ASEAN Member States visited India in conjunction with the Commemorative Summit.

SG Dato Lim also attended the ASEAN-India Youth Awards on 23 January and presented awards to some of the awardees. Organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs of India, the Awards honoured the exemplary work of young achievers from ASEAN and India. It was also a platform for them to interact and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Meanwhile, the ASEAN – India Business and Investment Meet and Expo, held on 22 and 23 January, gave an opportunity for the business community and policy makers from both sides to interact and network. A number of trade ministers from ASEAN Member States attended this event which was inaugurated by Minister of Commerce and Industry of India Suresh Prabhu. Finance Minister of India Arun Jaitley and SG Dato Lim also shared their views on the future of ASEAN-India economic relations.

Further, as part of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary, the External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the Bharat-ASEAN Maitri Park in New Delhi with the presence of ASEAN ministers, SG Dato Lim and high ranking officials from both sides. The friendship park covering 2.81 acre on Tuglaq Road in New Delhi includes such facilities as jogging and walking track, fountain, lotus pond and sprinkling irrigation system.
