Secretary-General of ASEAN calls for global collaboration on climate change

SINGAPORE, 12 July 2018 – Secretary-General of ASEAN Dato Lim Jock Hoi addressed the Special ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action (SAMCA), which was initiated and hosted by the Government of Singapore on 10 July.
Organised in the context of a broader Urban Sustainability Week in Singapore and opened by Minister for Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli, the meeting brought together ministers responsible for climate change or their representatives from ASEAN Member States for constructive dialogue on the region’s efforts and commitments towards climate change.
In his remarks, Dato Lim Jock Hoi congratulated the Government of Singapore for inaugurating 2018 as the Year of Climate Action, which amplifies the theme of “Resilient and Innovative”, the focus of Singapore’s Chairmanship of ASEAN for this year. The Secretary-General highlighted, among others, the importance of collaborative partnership, the role of cities, and technology innovation, in ASEAN’s efforts in advancing climate action in the region.
“The call for global actions on climate change has now become even louder and more urgent. Obviously, there is a need to act collaboratively with shared vision and action by all stakeholders,” he said. To this end, Dato Lim called for strengthened multi-stakeholder partnership and cross-sectoral coordination to realise low carbon and resilient region.
The ministers responsible for climate change from ASEAN Member States and Secretary-General of ASEAN also met their counterparts from China, Japan and Republic of Korea, as well as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, and the representatives of the respective President of the UNFCCC COP-23 (Fiji) and President-Designate of the UNFCCC COP-24 (Poland), at the Expanded SAMCA. The Expanded SAMCA provided an opportunity for wider international engagement on the region’s climate change efforts and needs.
