ASEAN explores deeper cooperation, synergy within Community

JAKARTA, 5 March 2019 – ASEAN representatives convened to discuss ways to promote cooperation and synergy of efforts across the three pillars of the ASEAN Community during the 11th Coordinating Conference for the ASEAN Political-Security Community (11th ASCCO) held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta today.

Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Political-Security Community (APSC) Hoang Anh Tuan chaired the conference which was attended by the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN, chairs of the various ASEAN sectoral bodies and entities associated with ASEAN across the three ASEAN Community pillars. The conference discussed a framework for qualitatively assessing the progress made in implementing the APSC Blueprint. The database developed by the ASEAN Secretariat for efficient monitoring of progress made was likewise presented during the conference.

Thailand, as ASEAN Chair, shared the priorities of ASEAN in 2019 which revolve around the theme of Advancing Partnerships for Sustainability, maintaining sustainable peace and security in the region, including through enhanced border management, enhanced cooperation to combat transnational crimes and promoting an ASEAN-centred regional architecture.

The 11th ASCCO also expressed confidence that its roadmap for building a political and security community was well on its way to be implemented by the target year of 2025, bringing ASEAN cooperation to the next level.

With the adoption of the ASEAN Enabling Masterplan by the ASEAN Leaders in late 2018, this year’s ASCCO had initial discussions on how the various sectoral bodies under the APSC pillar could contribute in implementing the Enabling Masterplan, which seeks to promote the rights of persons with disabilities.

The sectoral bodies and entities attending the conference were ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime, Directors-General of Immigration Departments and Heads of Consular Affairs Division of Ministries of Foreign Affairs Meeting, ASEAN Defence Senior Officials Meeting, ASEAN Senior Law Officials Meeting, ASEAN Senior Officials on Drugs Matters, ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, Senior Economic Officials Meeting, Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, ASEAN Centre for Energy, Senior Officials Meeting for the ASCC, Senior Officials Meeting on Youth, Senior Officials Meeting on Health Development, Senior Labour Officials Meeting, ASEAN Conference on Civil Service Matters, ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, ASEAN Foundation, ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center, South East Asia Parties Against Corruption, and ASEAN Disabilities Forum.
