16 Jul 2019

JAKARTA, 16 July 2019 – The 2019 ASEAN Artists Residency Programme was launched today at the ASEAN Secretariat.  Ms. Pannaphan Yodmamee of Thailand was chosen as the inaugural Resident Artist.

This ASEAN Secretariat-housed programme, which offers opportunities for the regional artist communities to undertake cultural exchanges, provides studio and exhibition spaces, public-education programmes, and other promotional activities for the selected resident artist over a month  while in Jakarta.

According to Mr Lee Yoong Yoong, the ASEAN Secretariat’s Director of Community Affairs, “The residency programme is designed to explore an ASEAN identity and to deepen mutual understanding across diverse regional cultures. The outcome will be a high impact arts and cultural initiative within ASEAN that will contribute meaningfully towards knowledge production in the visual arts.”

This inaugural round of residency programme is sponsored by the Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, Thailand’s largest and one of Southeast Asia‘s largest beverage companies.  ThaiBev is renowned for its art patronage.

The artworks produced during the residency will be unveiled on the 52nd ASEAN Day on August 8 2019 and be displayed among the various artworks from Southeast Asian artists included in the “Shifting Tides” exhibition for the entire August at the ASEAN Gallery. The “Shifting Tides” exhibition features a significant group of Southeast Asian artists who interrogate political, cultural, and personal experiences in a global context.

In years to follow, it is expected that there will be more emerging and potential young artists chosen to represent each of the ten ASEAN Member States. The works they produce during the residency will become part of ASEAN Gallery’s permanent collection.
