ASEAN Japan to strengthen joint collaboration on disaster management

JAKARTA, 10 June 2021 –  ASEAN and Japan convened the 1st Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management (ACDM) Plus Japan to reaffirm their commitment to further enhance collaboration on disaster management.

The meeting, held back-to-back with the 38th Meeting of the ACDM, kick-started a new  platform for policy dialogue between both sides to strengthen joint collaboration, and to achieve substantial reduction of disaster, losses in lives, and in the social, economic, and environmental assets within the ASEAN region.

ASEAN and Japan acknowledged the strong and long-standing support of the Japanese government in strengthening disaster management in the region, including through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre).

Both sides exchanged views on the future areas of collaboration including the possibility of cooperation in public-private partnership engagements for disaster management.

The 1st ACDM Plus Japan Meeting was co-chaired by Eric Yap, Commissioner of the Singapore Civil Defence Force and Chair of the ACDM, and Akifumi Nakao, the Director for Public and International Cooperation Division of the Cabinet Office of Japan.
