MFA PRESS STATEMENT: PRIME MINISTER LEE HSIEN LOONG'S ATTENDANCE AT THE 19TH ASEAN SUMMIT AND RELATED SUMMITS, BALI, INDONESIA, 19 NOVEMBER 2011
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is in Bali, Indonesia, attended the ASEAN-UN and ASEAN-India Summits today. PM Lee also attended the 6th East Asia Summit (EAS).
The 4th ASEAN-UN Summit adopted the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Partnership between ASEAN and the UN, which aims to further enhance and intensify levels of cooperation between both organisations.
During the 9th ASEAN-India Summit, the Leaders reviewed the progress in the Plan of Action to implement the ASEAN-India Partnership for Peace, Progress and Shared Prosperity (2010-2015). They also looked forward to the 20th Anniversary of relations in 2012 including the convening of a Commemorative Summit in New Delhi.
The 6th EAS welcomed the inaugural participation of the United States and Russia. The Leaders discussed the future direction of the EAS and reiterated their commitment to maintain and strengthen functional cooperation in the forum. They also agreed that ASEAN Connectivity should be a priority area for EAS cooperation. In this regard, the Leaders adopted the Declaration of the 6th EAS on ASEAN Connectivity. The Leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including maritime security, non-proliferation, and developments in the Korean Peninsula. Separately, the Leaders also adopted the Declaration of the EAS on the Principles for Mutually Beneficial Relations
In PM Lee's bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, both leaders reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations. They also discussed regional and international issues, particularly the state of the global economy and the Eurozone debt crisis.
