ANNOUNCEMENT OF SINGAPORE’S NATIONAL RECIPIENT OF THE ASEAN PEOPLE’S AWARD

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is pleased to announce Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust) as the National Recipient of the inaugural ASEAN People’s Award.

Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust) has made excellent contributions towards ASEAN’s community-building efforts in the area of youth and education through various activities such as the annual Youth Model ASEAN Conference (YMAC) and its Learning Express (LeX) programme for students.  Since their inception in 2012 and 2013 respectively, these programmes have brought together over 1000 students from ASEAN Member States to deepen their awareness and understanding of ASEAN’s diverse culture and current affairs amongst youth.  Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust) has fostered a greater sense of community and connectivity among students in ASEAN and in doing so, help build an ASEAN identity.

The decision to grant the Award to Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust) was made by a four-person assessment panel comprising Prof Chan Heng Chee, Ms Jennie Chua, Prof Tommy Koh, and Mr Ong Keng Yong following a public nomination exercise conducted by MFA from 25 August to 6 September 2015.  In total, 22 nominations were received from the public over the two-week nomination period for the Award.

As Singapore’s National Recipient of the ASEAN People’s Award, Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust) will be presented with a cash grant of US$10,000 from the ASEAN Secretariat and will join the nine other National Recipients from the other ASEAN Member States to receive the award at the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in November 2015.  Organised by Malaysia, the 2015 Chair of ASEAN, the award ceremony is aimed at recognising and encouraging efforts from the public to further contribute to the ASEAN Community.

MFA would like to thank members of the public for submitting nominations for the Award and also offer its warmest congratulations to Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust) for its well-deserved Award.
