MFA Press Statement: Meeting Between Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and His Excellency Dr Win Myat Aye, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Republic of the Union of Myanmar, 9 Nov 2018

His Excellency Dr Win Myat Aye, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, met Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan on 9 November. Dr Win Myat Aye is in Singapore as the keynote speaker at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) seminar, “Cyclone Nargis Ten Years on: A Decade of New Humanitarian Partnerships in Southeast Asia”.

          Dr Win Myat Aye and Minister Balakrishnan reaffirmed the warm ties between Singapore and Myanmar. They discussed recent developments in Myanmar, including the situation in Rakhine State. Dr Win Myat Aye updated Minister Balakrishnan on the work of the Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement, and Development in Rakhine (UEHRD), of which he is Vice-Chairman. Both Ministers agreed that it was important to create conducive ground conditions in Rakhine State to facilitate the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of the refugees. Dr Win Myat Aye also sought the support of the international community to enhance the socio-economic development in Rakhine State to benefit all communities. Minister Balakrishnan said Singapore and ASEAN will support the efforts of Myanmar to bring peace and stability to Rakhine State.
