PR Tan Hung Seng delivered the introductory remarks at the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Strategy Forum on Saturday, 7 July 2018 at the Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium. The Forum is part of ASEAN’s efforts to develop a regional strategy of sustainable urbanisation, and provided an opportunity to participants to learn more about the prioritised areas and provide feedback in those areas. Participants also shared their existing urbanisation plans, future priorities and best practices. In his remarks, PR highlighted the connection between sustainable urbanisation and ASEAN Connectivity, emphasising that: (i) ASEAN would only be able to realise ASEAN Connectivity if ASEAN cities were able to respond effectively to the negative effects of urbanisation; (ii) ASEAN cities played a critical role in the realisation of the ASEAN Economic Community, and ASEAN Connectivity was a critical enabler; and (iii) ASEAN Member States could leverage on each other’s experiences and comparative advantages to overcome the challenges of urbanisation.
