STATEMENT BY MS DIANE TAN, DELEGATE TO THE 75TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY, ON AGENDA ITEM 180, ON OBSERVER STATUS FOR THE SMALL ISLAND DEVELOPING STATES DOCK (SIDS DOCK) IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, SIXTH COMMITTEE, 6 NOVEMBER 2020

06 Nov 2020

1 Singapore is pleased to support the request by the Small Island Developing States Dock (SIDS DOCK) for observer status and to co-sponsor the draft resolution.

2 SIDS DOCK is an intergovernmental organisation whose aims include supporting and complementing the efforts of small island developing States to achieve the highest ambitions in energy transformation. SIDS DOCK helps small island developing States achieve low-carbon economies as a way to mobilise financing for climate change adaptation. SIDS DOCK also supports small island developing States in protecting the oceans, seas and marine resources, in combination with efforts to harness oceans as the largest renewable energy resource.

3 SIDS DOCK’s objectives and activities cover matters of interest to the General Assembly in the areas of climate change, sustainable development and oceans. With its focus on supporting small island developing States to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, SIDS DOCK would be in a position to constructively contribute to the work of the General Assembly. At the same time, its presence and engagement as an observer in the work of the General Assembly could enhance its own ability to assist small island developing States in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

4 For these reasons, Singapore supports SIDS DOCK’s request for observer status in the General Assembly. We hope the members of the Sixth Committee will consider the request favourably. Singapore also supports the requests of the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization and the Global Dryland Alliance for observer status, and is co-sponsoring the respective draft resolutions in this regard. We hope that members of the Sixth Committee will likewise consider these requests favourably.

5 Thank you.
