STATEMENT BY MR NATHANIEL KHNG, COUNSELLOR (LEGAL), PERMANENT MISSION OF SINGAPORE TO THE UNITED NATIONS, FOR CLUSTER 1 DEBATE, ON AGENDA ITEM 80 ON CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, RESUMED SESSION OF THE SIXTH COMMITTEE, 1 APRIL 2024

01 Apr 2024

Thank you, Mr Chairperson.

My delegation wishes to reiterate our appreciation for your leadership and reaffirm our full support for the Bureau of the Committee and the co-facilitators for the resumed session.  We also reiterate our appreciation for the work on the topic of crimes against humanity that was undertaken by the International Law Commission and Special Rapporteur Professor Sean Murphy.

2                           Crimes against humanity are among the most serious crimes of concern to the international community, and it is imperative that the international community works together to end impunity for perpetrators and provide justice for victims.  Singapore has actively engaged on this topic, and we have considered the Commission’s draft articles and its recommendation on the draft articles, and the views of other delegations on the draft articles and recommendation, very carefully.  Last year, we took part in the debates on the topic in the Committee, including at the resumed session, and submitted written comments and observations in response to the invitation in General Assembly resolution 77/249.

3                          The debates that have taken place in the Committee and the written submissions of delegations on the topic have raised a broad range of issues.  This is evident from the extensive list of issues prepared by the co-facilitators.  Many issues that have been raised are important and complex.  My delegation has been a strong and consistent supporter of open and constructive dialogue on the topic, and we hope that the discussions that will take place during the present resumed session will build on past discussions and bring us closer to solutions that appropriately account for various differing positions that have been expressed, as well as the gravity and importance of the topic.

4                           Thank you for your attention.
