Kudos to the General Cultural Authority of Saudi Arabia for inviting this year’s winner of the prestigious Menuhin Competition, 11 year-old Singaporean violin prodigy Chloe Chua.
Accompanied by the Menuhin Competition’s Artistic Director Gordon Back on piano, young Chloe treated an appreciative audience at the King Fahad Cultural Center in Riyadh last Saturday evening to a virtuoso performance! She chose a tasteful selection of 7 classical music excerpts that showcased her exceptional talent - blending beautiful musical parts with highly complex technical pieces so effortlessly with such grace, poise and confidence. My personal favourites were her rendition of the third movement of Mendelsohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor and the extremely challenging Variations On An Original Theme by Polish composer Henryk Wieniawski. Chloe, who came with her mother Eng Lee and violin teacher Yin Ke, was in Jeddah last night for another concert. I’m happy that Chloe's performances bear testimony to the manifold areas of cooperation between Singapore and Saudi Arabia.
