Senior Minister of State (SMS), Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Transport, Mrs Josephine Teo, met Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Yukiya Amano, and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Mr Yury Fedotov during her working visit to Vienna on 3 October 2016.

Mr Amano said that Singapore is an important partner for the IAEA, and encouraged Singapore to continue to be a strong example of South-South cooperation by providing technical assistance in peaceful nuclear applications to developing countries, in particular small island states, in areas such as the development of nuclear regulatory frameworks and nuclear medicine. SMS Teo reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to provide joint technical assistance with the IAEA to other developing countries under the enhanced Memorandum of Understanding on the Singapore-IAEA Third Country Training Programme, which was signed by Mr Amano in January 2015.  SMS Teo and Mr Amano also discussed regional developments in nuclear safety and security.

SMS Teo and Mr Fedotov discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Singapore and the UNODC. They agreed to explore opportunities to share best practices with, or to provide relevant technical assistance to, countries in our region, in particular in collaboration with the UNODC Regional Office in Bangkok. They also discussed developments related to the 2016 UN General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS) and its follow-up actions.
