Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Yukiya Amano is visiting Singapore from 13 to 15 August 2016.
Mr Amano called on Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan this morning. They had a wide-ranging discussion on international and regional developments in nuclear safety and security, as well as how the IAEA can further contribute to the region in nuclear safety and the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technologies.
Minister Balakrishnan and Mr Amano also reaffirmed Singapore and the IAEA’s commitment to provide joint technical assistance to other developing countries under the enhanced Memorandum of Understanding on the Singapore-IAEA Third Country Training Programme and other relevant means to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies in areas such as nuclear medicine, nuclear safety, emergency preparedness and response, and the development of nuclear regulatory frameworks.
Mr Amano also called on Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) Mr S Iswaran and visited the Protective, Analytical & Assessment Facility (PAAF), Singapore’s newly launched border laboratory. Mr Amano’s visit to Singapore is part of a regional tour which includes Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
