MFA Spokesman's Comments in Response to Media Queries on the Resumption of Direct Peace Talks between Israel and the Palestinians

In response to media queries on the resumption of direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, the MFA Spokesman said, "This is of course a positive development that is to be welcomed. But many obstacles remain, and not just between Israel and the Palestinian authorities led by President Abbas. There are critical differences within the Palestinians and as long as Hamas refuses to recognize Israel, it is difficult to be overly optimistic. The positions of Iran and Syria are also crucial.

Nevertheless this is an initiative to be encouraged and supported by all who sincerely wish to see an end to a conflict that has gone on for too long. It is a crucial first step towards the kind of just and lasting peace that Singapore has always supported."
