Condolence Letter from Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Sameh Hassan Shoukry
19 February 2016
H.E. Sameh Hassan Shoukry
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Arab Republic of Egypt
Excellency,
I would like to extend my deepest condolences on the passing of former United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Mr Boutros Boutros-Ghali. As the first Arab UNSG to helm the United Nations, Mr Boutros-Ghali made significant contributions to his country and the international community throughout his illustrious career.
Mr Boutros-Ghali assumed post at the UN following the end of the Cold War with earnest goals to reform the organisation and build an institutional framework for international peace and security. He stood firm in the face of powerful opposition, and gave voice to the needs of Africa and other developing countries.
We join you in mourning the loss of a great diplomat and statesman.
Yours sincerely,
DR VIVIAN BALAKRISHNAN
